Hundreds take part in Skate Day in Prospect Park

Hundreds of children hit the ice rinks in Prospect Park Wednesday as part of the annual Skate Day.

The city's Department of Youth and Community Development has organized the event for the past 12 years.

Students in kindergarten through middle school from all five boroughs were allowed to skate for free. Many of them come from city-run, after-school programs.

Participants said the event offered a great alternative to being stuck inside all day while school is out.
