Guardian Angels help curb NYC rat infestation

A group well-known for patrolling the subways of New York City to keep the public safe has a new mission.

Nancy Regula, one of the original Guardian Angels, is helping the city control ongoing problems of rat infestation.

For the past 10 years, she has created and helped cat colonies by trapping and neutering them throughout the city.

She says she started her first cat colony in Sunset Park. Since then with the help of other guardians, she has provided shelter and food to over 11 colonies of cats.

Now she's also putting these cats to work as exterminators, by placing cats in areas such as bodegas to help stop the rat infestation from continuing to spread.

She says Sunset Park has since seen a huge decrease in rats.

The guardians say they hope the program will help people understand how beneficial it is to keep these cats safe and loved.
