Residents not greeting reopening of BK jail with open arms
A number of residents are concerned about the upcoming reopening of the Brooklyn House of Detention next month in Boreum Hill.
The jail was closed in 2003 due to budget cuts, but is scheduled to again house prisoners starting next month.
Councilman Steve Levin (D-Brooklyn) says there were issues with the facility in the past, including crime and illegal paraphernalia found near the facility.
A number of local associations have created an advisory council to work with the jail if and when problems arise.
"If there are any major problems that come up, and I anticipate that there will be some, we are not going to be afraid to make our voices heard," says Councilman Levin.
