Police: Disabled child drowned in foster family's care

New details are emerging tonight in the investigation of a child's drowning death in Brownsville.

According to police, the 5-year-old girl who died while taking a bath was severely handicapped. The young girl was also in the care of a foster family when the incident happened.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says that the young girl had Dandy Walker Syndrome, as well as spina bifida. According to a statement, the young girl was in the bath under the supervision of a male guardian when his dog began to choke. The man turned his attention to the dog for a short period of time and when he came back, the young girl was under water.

A medical examiner is working to determine the child's exact cause of death.
