Police: Paramedics revive abandoned baby, mom charged
Authorities say paramedics were able to revive an abandoned newborn in Crown Heights last night.
Neighbor Lydia Romero says she found 27-year-old Shoshannah Muhammad sitting on the stairs outside her Rogers Avenue apartment with a baby wrapped in a sheet and bag of baby supplies. When Romero approached the woman, Muhammad allegedly told her that she was on crack, and if she were to take her newborn child to the hospital, officials would take her away.
Romero says she went inside her apartment, and when she came out, Muhammad was gone, leaving the baby on the steps with the umbilical cord still attached.
Paramedics who arrived on the scene used CPR to revive the child, who had turned blue and limp by that point. The infant is in stable condition tonight at Kings County Hospital.
Muhammad was arrested and has been charged with acting in a manner injurious to a child younger than 17 years old.
