Bed-Stuy school commemorates Harriet Tubman
A school in Bedford-Stuyvesant honored Harriet Tubman today as part of its Women's History Month celebration. Held at the Boys and Girls High School, the ninth annual event featured singing, dancing and historical presentations. Students attended from across the school district, saying the program helped them appreciate her work. Tubman spearheaded the underground railroad - a network of secret routes and safe houses used to free slaves prior to the Civil War. Pauline and Geraldine Johnson, who claim they are Harriet Tubman's great-grandnieces, also received a proclamation from Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.).
