M.S. 577 parents keep students home amid mold concerns
Some parents in Williamsburg are still refusing to send their kids to school after mold was discovered inside M.S. 577 last week. School officials say more than 100 students didn't show up to class Monday, dropping the attendance rate to 79 percent from its usual 95 percent. It is the seventh day in a row the attendance rate has been in the 70s. Some concerned parents say they would keep their children out of school if it weren't for the upcoming state exams. The Department of Education (DOE) says the mold problem has been addressed and the school is now clean, but not everyone agrees. Some parents say they would like to relocate their kids to a different school, but the DOE is not allowing students to be transferred at this time.
