Worker killed in Gerritsen Beach building collapse
A building collapse in Gerritsen Beach claimed the life of a construction worker this morning.
Officials say the collapse happened at a residential construction site at 40 Frank Court. They say workers were on the roof when the home slid off its foundation.
The victim was rushed to Lutheran Hospital, where he later died. Two other workers suffered minor injuries.
Department of Buildings (DOB) Commissioner Robert LiMandri says the contractor has current permits. However, it appears the foundation was not secure and could not support the two-story structure that replaced an old one-story bungalow.
"We continue our investigation, but we believe there may be some design flaws in the actual construction," LiMandri says.
The DOB has shut down utilities in the building, which will be torn down. The neighbors who live next door will have to be relocated during the demolition.
