Fatal hit-and-run stuns Bay Ridge community

Police are seeking the driver responsible for a hit-and-run accident Monday in Bay Ridge that claimed the life Amjad Barakat, 34.

According to reports, Barakat was crossing 72nd Street near Seventh Avenue in Bay Ridge at around 9 p.m. when a beige four-door sedan on Seventh Avenue hit him. He was prounounced dead at the scene.

Members of the community are stunned by the accident, which took place at an intersection close to a school. Members of Community Board 10 confirm that accidents have happened at the spot in the past, citing a 2004 incident involving a detective who died after swerving his car to avoid hitting a child.

Anyone with information on the hit-and-run is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
