Immigrants, activists protest safe communities program
Immigrants and civil rights activists are protesting a new state program that would require police to share fingerprints with immigration officials. Demonstrators took to the streets near City Hall today to rally against the Secure Communities Program. Under the initiative, government officials say they will deport illegal immigrants by working with local law enforcement agents. Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) suspended the program last June, but officials say the ban could be lifted tomorrow.
