Unions sue over latest round of school closures

Unions representing teachers and principals are suing the city over the latest round of school closures.

The unions want to keep 24 schools open, including several in Brooklyn, after the Panel for Educational Policy voted to shutter the institutions and reopen them in the same buildings with different names and staff.

A lawyer for the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) says that if the city isn't legitimately closing the schools then it cannot claim that's what it's doing and hire new educators.

The heated issue has sparked months of protests from parents, students and teachers.
