1 dead, 1 hospitalized in attempted Coney Island water rescue

One person is dead and a second is in the hospital after an attempted water rescue in Coney Island.

According to local fishermen, one of their own jumped in the waters after they watched a man jump off a pier near West 17th Street.

The fishermen was pulled to safety by boaters and taken to the hospital. He was unable to save the other man, but many are hailing him a hero for his efforts.
