26 firefighters, 1 civilian hurt in 7-alarm blaze

About 200 firefighters battled a massive seven-alarm fire in a Prospect Lefferts Garden residential building Thursday.

The FDNY says 26 firefighters were hurt, including one seriously, after flames broke out on the top floor and roof at 665 New York Ave. One civilian was also injured and treated at the scene.

Red Cross worker Charles Wells collapsed during a press conference at the fire because of a heat-related condition. He was conscious and breathing when taken to the hospital.

Officials say more than 100 families have been displaced.

According to witnesses, a huge lightning strike was seen before flames broke out on the roof of the building, but the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
