President Obama has called on Congress to approve a one-year extension of Bush-era tax cuts for the middle class. The measure would affect residents earning less than $250,000 a year. If Congress fails to pass an extension, more than 50 temporary tax breaks for individuals and businesses could be slashed by the end of the year.
