City health board approves super-sized soda ban

The city Board of Health has approved Mayor Michael Bloomberg's controversial ban on super-sized sodas and other sugary drinks.
The regulation, which puts a 16-ounce size limit on large beverage sales at restaurants, concession stands and other eateries, was passed by a panel of health experts after several months of review.
The ban will apply in fast-food joints, movie and Broadway theaters, workplace cafeterias, and most other places selling prepared food. It does not apply to drinks sold in supermarkets and most convenience stores.
Bloomberg and other advocates say the beverage crackdown will help tackle obesity, but many soda makers and sellers argue that it unfairly singles out those drinks as the reason for the obesity epidemic.
