NYPD: 2 suspects in custody for off-duty officer shooting
Two suspects wanted in connection with the shooting of an off-duty officer in The Bronx are now in police custody.
The arrests came after wounded officer Ivan Marcano received a bedside promotion to detective from NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly and Mayor Michael Bloomberg. He was then released from Bronx Lebanon Hospital to hundreds of cheering comrades.
The 27-year-old was shot in the chest Wednesday after police say he tried to stop three suspects from robbing a 65-year-old man. Marcano then fatally shot 18-year-old Prince James after the men fled the scene in a white Mustang, only to get into a car accident.
After a nearly two-day search, police tracked down the other two, 20-year-old Jason Leiva, and a man with the last name Ortega. Authorities say James is the suspect who opened fire on Marcano.
