Oil spill cleanup under way in Paerdegat Basin

Crews are out in full force vacuuming oil and gas from an underground pipe that sent 1,100 gallons of a petroleum-cement mixture into a Brooklyn waterway.
Workers from National Grid, Con Edison and the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have shut down an older pipe that began to leak into the Paerdegat Basin last week. The U.S. Coast Guard has taken the lead on cleanup efforts and will conduct its own environmental assessment.
The source of the leak is in a residential area in Canarsie and just a few feet from a popular park. Neighbors say the smell of gas has been so strong at times that they're aren't able to open their windows.
The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has issued a warning to boaters not to fish in the basin. To watch extended footage from the oil spill, click on News 12 Extra on Optimum TV channel 612.
