Xaverian H.S. plans to go co-ed in 2016
Xaverian High School in Bay Ridge will soon start accepting girls for the first time.
The Shore Road school has been all-boys for decades. The school says it will accept boys and girls starting in September of next year.
The Catholic school's board of trustees voted unanimously earlier this month to launch the latest phase on its plans to expand.
The president says that they are confident that accepting talented young women will strengthen the high school and the Catholic community.
The news is significant because the school is well-known for its highly successful sports programs.
The freshman class starting in September 2015 will be the last made up of all boys. The co-ed program will begin with students starting high school in September 2016.
