ShotSpotter to activate in Brooklyn this week
Police officers in Brooklyn will soon have a new crime fighting tool.
ShotSpotter technology is expected to be activated in the borough this week after recently launching in the Bronx.
The system is made up of multiple sensors and ultra-sensitive microphones that detect and immediately notify the NYPD when gunshots are fired, even if no one calls 911.
ShotSpotter works like a GPS system to pinpoint the location and direction of gunfire. It aims to decrease officer response time and enhance public safety.
Areas with a history of high gun violence are first to receive the new technology.
