Inside Clinton Hill-based Black Girls Rock!
While some people may have first heard about the organization Black Girls Rock! from the BET award show of the same name, the Clinton Hill group has been working for years to build girls' self-esteem.
"Black Girls Rock! is an affirmation, and it is now a movement," says Beverly Bond, the DJ and former model who started the organization about a decade ago. "We have an award show. We have mentoring programs. It's an empowering message to black women."
That message was shared by first lady Michelle Obama when she spoke at the "Black Girls Rock!" awards on Easter.
The nonprofit mentors young girls to believe in themselves and their ability to achieve greatness.
Once that message is received, mentees like Karyn Gittens say it is their job to ensure that they don't become derailed by contrarian views.
