Cypress Hills 5K run honors fallen NYPD officer

Hundreds hit the pavement in Brooklyn Sunday morning in honor of a fallen NYPD officer.

The third annual Cypress Hills Cemetery 5K Run Through History was held to support the family of Detective Peter Figoski.

Figoski was shot in the face in 2011 a few blocks from where the race was held. The shooter, Lamont Pride, was sentenced to 45 years to life in prison.

Former colleagues and brothers in blue say the run is a special event that remembers a man who was highly regarded as a humble, strong and competent police officer.

Registration fees and donations collected at the race will go toward St. Mary's Hospital for Children in Queens and the PBA Widows' and Children's Fund.

Organizers say the run raised $11,000 last year and they expect to receive more this time around.
