After struggling to rebuild from Superstorm Sandy, volunteers in Red Hook are coming together in an effort to beautify the neighborhood again.

Real estate developer Forest City Ratner, along with Rebuilding Together New York City and several community groups, raised flower beds, landscaped and conducted painting renovations to uplift the entire area.

Superstorm Sandy damaged and destroyed hundreds of thousands of homes, and the damage is estimated at more than $60 billion, coming second to Hurricane Katrina.

"The floodwaters came up almost 12 feet, and the properties closest to the river were severely flooded up through their basement into the first floors," said Kimberly George, executive director of Rebuilding Together New York City.

Organizers of the neighborhood revitalization program are planning to hold another daylong series of volunteer revitalization projects in other Brooklyn neighborhood damaged by Sandy in October.
