Vandals knocked over a statue of the Virgin Mary at a Brooklyn Heights church, police say.
Surveillance video appears to show two young men topple the 51-year-old statue at the Pastor of Saint Charles Borromeo Church at around 2:15 a.m. Friday.
The church's pastor says police are using the footage to try to catch the suspects.
"This statue is symbolically, very meaningful. I can't believe this happened," says Father Edward Doran. "I feel so hurt."
Residents say the act of vandalism isn't just disrespectful to the religious community, but to the entire neighborhood.
"It's a great neighborhood and it's very quiet, which is why this is a little alarming and surprising," says Cobble Hill resident Drew Sachs.
Repairs will cost up to $2,000, according to Doran. He says the statue was left mostly intact where it fell.
