Protesters in Bedford-Stuyvesant are taking to the streets to fight back against evictions and rent hikes in their neighborhood.

Residents say developers are pushing them out of their homes and businesses.

Protesters say the latest example came from a candy shop on Tompkins Avenue. Jimmy's Candy Shop has been around for 40 years, but the owner, James Leary, says his landlord recently kicked him out over a rent dispute.

He says that he showed up at his store one day to find it padlocked with all of his merchandise inside, even his cat. The cat was released, but Leary says his landlord still won't let him back in due to a rent dispute.

Local business owners say it's part of a disturbing pattern of developers raising prices, evicting long-term tenants and putting up luxury developments.
