A new exhibit in Brooklyn Heights is hoping to make New Yorkers more aware of the struggles their disabled neighbors face each day.
The "Gaining Access" exhibit at the Brooklyn Historical Society highlights the disability rights movement that has taken place for decades as people fight for accessibility throughout the city.
Curator Warren Shaw reflects on how difficult life was for his disabled parents in the 1960s. They were among the activists and lawmakers who worked toward making New York more accessible.
The exhibit will start visitors at the early stages of the movement, all the way back in the 1860s, and will take them up to present day.
The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, and the exhibit will run through October.
