Ceremony honors Revolutionary War prisoners

Thousands who were imprisoned and died during the American Revolutionary War were honored Saturday during an annual ceremony in Brooklyn.
The Society of Old Brooklynites honored scores of American sailors, soldiers and civilians who were captured nearly 239 years ago in the Battle of Brooklyn, which took place at Wallabout Bay.
They were held in deplorable conditions and the remains of those men were brought to the Prison Ship Martyrs Monument in Fort Greene as a permanent memorial.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries introduced a bill in 2013 that would make the monument a national landmark. It has passed the House and is currently held up in the Senate.
