Roller skating can be a great recreational activity, but when it's dialed up a few notches you get roller derby, an intensely physical sport.
News 12's Natasha Geigel met up with the ladies of Gotham Girls Roller Derby to learn the ropes. The league is currently ranked No. 1 in the world.
The league is made up of four teams that represent different parts of the city, including the Bronx Gridlock and the Brooklyn Bombshells.
Getting ready for to participate in the fast-paced sport involves core-strength training, agility footwork and sprinting and running.
They offer a recreational league for interested beginners who are still learning how to skate.
