Bed-Stuy school gets a fresh start
A Bedford-Stuyvesant elementary school is being cleaned out so it can have a fresh start.
Volunteers from the non-profit organization Uprising joined teachers at P.S. 54 on Sunday to help prepare the school for the 250 students who will arrive on Sept. 9.
They cleared out decades worth of notebooks, furniture and physical education equipment.
"I'm expecting the children to walk in with their jaws dropped and be like, 'Wow, I don't recognize my school, this is amazing,'" said first-year principal Anthony Pirros. "I've got new materials on the shelves, it's clean and organized."
