NYCHA residents rally against gentrification

Low- and middle-income residents say they are being pushed out of Brooklyn as rents rise in the borough.
A group of concerned residents rallied at the Farragut Houses to explain how they believe the city is pushing them out of neighborhoods they have called home for decades.
The group says that the New York City Housing Authority is contributing to gentrification of the area that is helping to push some residents.
The tenants at the Farragut Houses say that many NYCHA apartments in Brooklyn are in disrepair and stay that way for many years.
They claim this often forces people to move out of apartments they can afford and that very often tenants are not welcomed back if and when repairs are made.
A NYCHA spokesperson says the authority is facing the worst financial crisis in history and does not have the funds to address the infrastructure needs of its buildings.
