Bed-Stuy community rallies for safer library

Community members in Bed-Stuy rallied outside the Bedford library Thursday for a second time as part of their "take back the library" initiative.
Residents say the upgrade in security at their local library branch is helping to create a safer library atmosphere, but they still feel a responsibility to crack down on those using the library for reasons other than what it is intended for.
Neighbors say the library should be a safe haven for children, but in recent years it has become a place where drug addicts spend their days and sometimes do drugs in the bathroom.
The 79th Precinct and the library system made several security changes to make the library safer. These changes include locks on the bathroom doors and additional security.
Community members plan to continue library take-back rallies over the next few weeks with the ultimate goal of turning it into a drug-free zone.
