NYC Goes Purple Day is a monthlong initiative to spread awareness about domestic violence and the alarming number of domestic violence cases in the city, especially in Brooklyn.
Statistics show Brooklyn had the most domestic violence incidents between 2013 and 2014, totaling more than 179,000 reports out of the 567,000 reports citywide.
City leaders say these numbers are unacceptable, and they want people to be aware that there are many resources available for victims.
The Barclays Center is one of the Brooklyn sites where community members and local elected officials, all dressed in purple, handed out fliers to spread awareness on Thursday.
A package of bills will be introduced by City Council Thursday that would require the NYPD to more frequently collect domestic violence statistics.
