Car plunges into canal after alleged hit-and-run
A driver plunged his car into the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn while attempting to flee the scene of a hit-and-run, according to officials.
The incident happened shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Court and Degraw streets. Officials say a 49-year-old woman was putting her 1-year-old child into her Toyota Camry when a 36-year-old driver struck them both.
Officials say the driver continued to drive down Degraw Street before crashing into the water.
Police say the driver was able to get out of the car before it became fully submerged. He was subsequently arrested.
The man is facing charges of reckless endangerment and leaving the scene of a crime.
The woman and her child were taken to Methodist Hospital. Officials say the woman suffered a minor foot injury, but she and her child are expected to be OK.
