Bedford-Stuyvesant residents opposed to the city's plans to create new homeless shelters in the neighborhood voted against a supportive housing building on Gates Avenue Tuesday.
The local Community Board 3 voted against the new shelter because, members say, too many new supportive service facilities are being placed in the same area.
"There's some right here on Dekalb," says board member Tremaine Wright. "Some right here on Monroe. We just need something else."
The Gates Avenue mental health facility would be the latest supportive building on a block where there is already a homeless shelter and a drug treatment center.
"We want to see the city place these units throughout the borough," Wright says. "No one community should have to bear the brunt of all of this."
Ultimately, the Department of Housing Preservation and Development has final say in whether the new facility can open on Gates Avenue.
Neither the HPD nor a representative of the mayor's office returned requests for comment on the issue.
