Residents of Park Slope and Prospect Heights took the day to thank crossing guards in their community.

Crossing guards are part-time civilian positions within the NYPD. Brooklyn Councilman Brad Lander also took the time to show his gratitude to those who keep kids safe.

"Crossing guards keep our kids safe every single day in the rain, in the snow, in the hail, in the sun," Lander says. "And I know as a parent myself, and with the other parents in the community, we're just so grateful."

Elizabeth Volpe, a crossing guard in the borough, appreciated the gesture from the community.

"It feels great that you made an impression on those people out there every day," Volpe says. "And they remember you and that they appreciate us and that's a good feeling."
