Police discover 51-year-old woman’s body on park bench with slash across throat in Red Hook
Police have identified the body of a 51-year-old woman whose throat had been slashed on a park bench near the Red Hook Houses Thursday morning.
Sharon Whigham was a resident of the housing building. Police say they found her body outside the Miccio Community Center at 110 West Ninth St. around 4:30 a.m.
Police say they were responding to a 911 call for an assault in the area when they found Whigham. EMS officials pronounced her dead at the scene.
Police arrested a man in the area, but that appears to be unrelated to the killing. A police spokesperson says no arrests have been made in the case, and the investigation is ongoing.
According to authorities, Whigham had a history of drug abuse. But they say it's unclear whether that had anything to do with her slaying.
Whigham is survived by grown children who also live in the Red Hook Houses, according to a worker at the Miccio Community Center.
