Brooklyn Naval Cemetery named open public space

The Brooklyn Naval Cemetery was in the borough 90 years but now the space has been transformed into an open public space.

The area has been renamed the Naval Cemetery Landscape, and it is one of six locations nationwide funded by the TKF Foundation.

The 1.7-acre space was designed to create a place that honors the history of the site while also serving as a space for New Yorkers looking to escape the urban environment. The project was spearheaded by the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative.

The Naval Cemetery Landscape is the first open space created as part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. Designers of the project believe spaces like it can have a positive impact on Brooklyn.
