Students hold walkout to protest plan to school move
Students at Medgar Evers College Prep in Crown Heights staged a walkout Tuesday to protest a proposal to move their school into Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy.
The students say they aren't familiar with Bed-Stuy, and that their parents are concerned by the neighborhood's reputation for gang activity.
They also protested the reassignment of their interim principal, Angella Smith, which happened a few months ago.
The president of the schools' Parent Teacher Association, Adrian MonDesir, says officials removed Smith without giving notice to parents or the student body.
"Who comes into a house and takes the mother out or takes the father out without explanation?" MonDesir asks. "We feel disrespected by that."
The Department of Education says it plans to appoint a new acting principal to the school.
Parents at the school say they plan to voice their opposition to the proposed move at a public hearing with the DOE later this month.
