World’s tallest modular building nears opening
Construction is underway near Barclays Center on new skyscrapers that are part of the overall Pacific Park project.
Officials expect the first building, 461 Dean St., to open this fall. Developers say it's the tallest modular building in the world.
That's because the apartments were built out of steel frames, rather than typical concrete, according to officials. The developers had everything assembled off site before installation at the 32-story building.
"Nobody will even know that it's modular, so that's one of the other features we're very proud of," says Adam Greene, of Forest City Ratner Companies. "The construction methodology was different, but the product is the same. A building is a building."
According to the developers, the site has been underused for years. The new residential building will offer both market rate and affordable housing options to make the most of the location.
"Everything south of it is a historical district, and everything to the north of it is you're looking over the Barclays Center," Greene says. "So there's nothing interrupting your views of all of the city. It's pretty amazing."
