Brooklyn high school renamed to honor 9/11 hero
A dedication ceremony was held Thursday for the renaming of a Brooklyn high school in East New York.
The FDNY High School was renamed the Captain Vernon A. Richard High School for Fire and Life Safety to honor Capt. Vernon A. Richard, who died in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Richard grew up in Bedford-Stuyvesant and graduated from Boys High School. He served as a firefighter in the Bronx and climbed the ranks to Ladder Company 7 in Manhattan.
"It's a proud moment, but he's going to have an impact on young people's lives whether he's here or he's not here," said his son, Vernon Allan Richard II.
Richard was promoted to captain after his death.
