Our Lady of Mount Carmel kicks off annual Giglio festival
The annual Giglio Festival at Our Lady of Mount Carmel kicked off Wednesday night.
The festival is famous for its sausages, zeppoles and a giant statue of St. Paulino.
Italian immigrants from the small southern city of Nola brought the Giglio tradition to Brooklyn 129 years ago to remember the homecoming of St. Paulino.
Every year, a statue of the Virgin Mary is carried on the shoulders of several men to mark the opening night of the festival. The tradition has been going on for the last 35 years.
The festival lasts for 12 days with games and food on the streets and Mass celebrations in the church.
