Cypress Hills Houses without gas after explosion threat, leak
A group of tenants in the Cypress Hills Houses say they haven't had cooking gas in two buildings since a man threatened to blow them up Sunday.
They say NYCHA gave each apartment a single hot plate.
"With one hot plate, you can't cook for three kids," says tenant Nadine Alvarado.
Tamecia Peek, a neighbor, says the hot plate adds stress whenever she needs to cook a meal.
NYCHA workers visited the building after the threat and discovered a gas leak, prompting the shutoff. The threat itself was determined to have been false.
Some of the tenants say they want to use barbecues rather than hot plates, but NYCHA does not allow that.
In a statement, the housing authority named safety its top priority and said service would be restored quickly.
