Police: 17-year-old man killed by drunken driver while riding bike in Gerritsen Beach
A 17-year-old teenager was killed by a drunken driver while riding his bike in Brooklyn, police say.
It happened Sunday at the intersection of Gerritsen and Gotham avenues in Gerritsen Beach around 8:45 p.m.
Police say they responded to the scene and found 17-year-old Sean Ryan, of Brooklyn, lying unconscious and unresponsive in the street.
They say Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say a white Honda Accord was traveling southbound on Gerritsen Avenue, when the driver crossed into the painted median and struck Ryan, who was traveling in the median going northbound on Gerritsen Avenue.
The driver of the car has been identified as 24-year-old Thomas Groarke, of Brooklyn.
Officials say Groarke had a blood alcohol content level of more than double the legal amount when he struck the biker.
Police say Groarke was arrested and is facing vehicular manslaughter and DWI charges.
Friends of the victim say he had just graduated from Xaverian High School and was looking forward to starting college in the fall.
