A new supportive housing project for people with mental illnesses in Bed-Stuy received final approval Tuesday.

City Council has approved the plan to build supportive and affordable housing for people managing mental illnesses. It's part of the city's public health system and aims to address housing instability. The chosen location is located very close to Woodhull Medical Center. Officials say patients will only have a short walk.

Officials say this type of supportive housing is proven to improve the health of sick individuals, prevent some conditions before they develop and reduce health care costs.

Comunilife, a nonprofit organization, will construct the six-story building to include on-site social services. It will contain about 90 units on a lot adjacent to the hospital.

Construction will begin at the end of this year and is expected to conclude in 2018.
