Bay Ridge community lobbying Congress to pass breast cancer research bill

Residents in Bay Ridge want answers as to why their area has such a high rate of breast cancer. That's why they are lobbying Congress to pass legislation aimed at studying the role the environment plays in cancer rates.

According to the American Cancer Society, Bay Ridge has the highest rate of breast cancer in Brooklyn with 117 new cases last year. The area also had high rates of colon and lung cancer. The statistics have residents concerned, and some believe outside factors such as traffic and pollution may be a factor.

The Breast Cancer and Environmental Research Act, which has been presented to Congress three other times, calls for the government to spend $30 million over five years to conduct a nationwide study. Currently, 133 members support the bill.
