Funeral service set for slain NYPD Officer Liu
Funeral services were finalized Monday for an NYPD officer who was killed in the line of duty, giving mourners the opportunity to soon pay their last respects.
The wake for Officer Wenjian Liu will be held Saturday, Jan. 3, at Aievoli Funeral Home at 1275 65th St. in Brooklyn from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral will be held at the same location the next day at 10 a.m.
Liu and his police partner, Officer Rafael Ramos, were ambushed by gunman Ismaaiyl Brinsley as they sat in their patrol car in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn on Dec. 20. Brinsley, whose family said he suffered from mental illness, then ran to a subway station and fatally shot himself.
Earlier, Brinsley shot his ex-girlfriend, Shaneka Thompson, in Baltimore, according to authorities. She remains in serious condition.
A steady stream of civilians and police, some whose eyes were filled with tears, continued to pay their respects Monday at a makeshift memorial at Myrtle and Tompkins avenues where the officers were fatally shot.
Liu and Ramos were posthumously promoted to detective first grade.
On Saturday, an estimated 25,000 mourners, including police officers from across the country, attended Ramos' funeral in the Glendale section of Queens. Vice President Joe Biden, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYPD Commissioner William Bratton attended.
