Congregants mourning longtime Crown Heights pastor

Posted: Updated:

Congregants at the Universal Temple Church of God in Crown Heights are mourning the death of their beloved pastor. Bishop Landon Penn, who died Saturday, founded the church in 1969. He served as a liason between the Crown Heights community and the NYPD, and founded public housing and drug prevention programs. Bishop Cecil Riley, who will take over as the church's pastor, said he will keep up Penn's goodwill work. "To say that he will be sadly missed is the understatement of the era," Riley said. "That legacy that he has left, I owe myself to him, to continue that. If I can do that, I will be satisfied." A national memorial service for Penn will be held in Brooklyn on Oct. 17.Beloved bishop remembered in Brooklyn
