BK Navy Yard donates $25K to help school chess team

A local middle school chess team is closer to heading to California for its national championships after a $25,000 donation from the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Students and faculty at I.S. 318 in Williamsburg say they were worried they would not be able to raise enough money to afford the trip. The Navy Yard's power company provided the lump sum, bringing the school nearer to its fundraising goal. "We had such a budget crisis, and we've been really trying to raise money to help these kids go to nationals because a lot of them can't afford to contribute anything," chess coach Elizabeth Spiegel said. School officials say they are still aiming to raise another $10,000 so students from low-income families will not need to shell out travel expenses.12-year-old boy awarded national title for chessI.S. 318 celebrates another chess championship
