Friends to hold benefit for suspected hate crime victim

Friends of a suspected hate crime victim in Williamsburg say they are throwing a benefit together to help him pay his medical bills and help spread awareness of hate crimes.

Police say Barie Shortell was brutually beaten on North 4th Street back on Feb. 22. Shortell says he believes he was attacked because he is gay.

Police say they are investigating the attack as a hate crime.

Shortell says he doesn't have health insurance and hasn't even begun to add up the bills.
