NYPD honors officer killed in line of duty
Flags flew at half-staff at the 84th Precinct in Downtown Brooklyn today in honor of NYPD officer Alain Schaberger, who was killed while on duty yesterday.
Investigators say George Villanueva, 42, was threatening to kill his girlfriend at 45 St. Marks Pl. when Schaberger responded to the domestic-dispute call. They say he was escorting Villanueva when he gained the upper hand and pushed Schaberger over a railing to his death.
According to police records, Villanueva has 28 prior arrests, including burglary and aggravated assault. He now faces a first-degree murder charge and could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted.
The Police Benevolent Association has released a statement on the incident saying, "While we honor the courage of Officer Schaberger, we must also question a system that allows a vile and violent career criminal with scores of arrests for violent offenses to continue to walk our neighborhoods."
