Police charge suspect in officer's death

Police have charged George Villanueva in the death of officer Alain Schaberger.

Investigators say that Schaberger, a 10-year veteran of the NYPD, was responding to domestic dispute call at 45 St. Marks Place over a dispute between Villanueva and his girlfriend.

Officials say that Villanueva was threatening to kill his girlfriend and that Schaberger was escorting Villanueva while he was handcuffed when he gained the upper hand and pushed Schaberger over a railing.

Schaberger fell nine feet onto the floor below, breaking his neck.

The injured officer was transported to Lutheran Hospital where he later died.

Authorities say that Villanueva has a long criminal history including 28 different arrests and a dozen domestic incidents between him and his girlfriend.
